"Fashion is a b*tch." - Unknown
That's pretty much the most accurate and interesting statement I've ever come across.
It got me thinking, what kind of a person would fashion be? If fashion were a person, I imagine she'd be the prettiest, most popular mean girl in school, high school to be specific. She would have a loyal band of followers and people would whisper behind her back wherever she went. She would be judged relentlessly, but she wouldn't care. She would be ridiculously controlling, incredibly indecisive, always changing, and most importantly, fearless. At a glance, she would seem artificial and fake, but if you take the time to get to know her, that's far from what she is. She's complex, complicated yet so simple at the same time. Behind her misunderstood facade, she's truly amazing. You know, the typical cliché sappy chick flick storyline.
These days, it seems like everyone - the seemingly innocent little kids on the playground, the teenagers that some of us are stuck with eight hours a day, parents, elders... nearly everyone around me seem to think that fashion is this artificial thing and if you were even remotely interested it in, you were immediately thought of as artificial, fake, that you didn't value your studies and cared too much about your outer appearance. WHAT?! It's honestly ridiculous. And it bugs me immensely because there's a lot more to fashion than supposedly "weird" and "outrageous" clothes.
I'm in no way trying to say that it's wrong if you don't care that much about what you wear, but it's those who judge people who are interested in fashion and think that they're all the same that really, really, really annoy me and it's just really frustrating.
I think that fashion is really fascinating because it's constantly changing and it's never really satisfied, in a way, with what's "in" or "cool" or whatever word you want to use to describe it. Some people might think that it's "bad" or something that it's changing all the time. Sometimes, when you finally catch on to a trend, when you finally like it, it has moved on. But I'm captivated by it. It's like it's improving itself every single season. It takes its supposed mistakes - the trends from a different era - and reinvents it and makes it better - it reinvents itself constantly. Which is so freaking amazing in my opinion.
I'm the kind of person who's always finding ways to improve and just be better, so it's really cool that there's something that I can relate to and something that I know will always be there for me. Which is kind of weird, I guess, but whatever.
Thanks for reading!

Hello, lovely!
ReplyDeleteI have to say, it drives me mad when someone is written off as artificial or unintelligent because they have an interest in fashion. I don't think anybody has the right to judge someone based on their interests because everyone is different! X
Hey B!

I loved this post so much! You write really well and it's very interesting to read. I know that people nowadays believe that fashion is only about outer beauty and it's wrong. I think people, who are wearing only mass production or the ones who are trying too hard to be 'fashionable' are the ones, who spoil the idea of fashion. There are ones, who still understand the form of art and how it is possible to express yourself through clothing, and that's the most important in this case. The part, where you wrote about fashion changing and about the trends that leave just when you're learnt to love them, made me laugh, because I realised that so true!
ReplyDeleteSorry about this long comment, but your blog really caught my eye and I'm happy to find you through IFB site.

Dearest Juliana,
ReplyDeleteI find this post very inspiring, because I feel the same way. There are times that, no matter how much you ignore them, there will always be people who would misunderstand and judge you superficially. Thus, make us artists. I believe fashion is art and art is fashion.
This post is really engaging. I totally agree with almost every sentence.
Cheers and have a lovely day ahead!
PS: I followed your blog, by the way.
