DIY: Gold Polka Dot Walls

Hi there! For the longest time, I had little flower stencils on my wall that just screamed little girl's room which is pretty typical considering that I was six when my parents and I painted my bedroom walls. Now, as a 15 year old, I obviously grew out of those and wanted something a bit different and more grown up, and again, for the longest time, I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do with my walls to cover them up.

Then, one day, I think I was looking at the Kate Spade stationery when I got the idea to cover the flowers up with gold polka dots. Thankfully, the DIY worked out and now every time I look at my bedroom walls, it looks like Kate Spade which makes me really happy, so I thought I'd share with you how to do this to your own walls!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • white cardstock (you'll need about 25 sheets, give or take depending on the size of your room and how many polka dots you want)
  • gold spray paint (Krylon 18 kt. Gold Plate)
  • scissors
  • mug (big enough to cover any stencils already on your wall if needed)
  • pencil
  • garbage bags or newspaper (not pictured)
  • heavy books (ie. dictionaries) (optional)

First off, figure out roughly about how many dots you'll need to cover the walls of your room. In mine, they only cover the top half of my wall and my room's pretty small as well, so I needed around 70 dots. My room is around three arms lengths by two arm lengths.

Once you've got that figured out, use your mug and trace dots with your pencil onto the cardstock until you have enough. You probably won't be able to fill the whole page up with circles, so you can do some half circles if you want to add a dot where there's already a picture frame or something covering up most of the area.

Once they're all cut, lay them out on a garbage bag, preferably outside. The first batch I did indoors because I was short on time and only needed a small amount to cover my workspace, hence the background of the photo.

Then, spray the dots evenly in gold with your can of spray paint. You should let them sit for at least an hour

Next, make little rolls of tape to go on the back of the dots to stick them on the wall. You'll probably need three to four per dot, so get ready to make lots of those bad boys.

Once you've made enough, just stick them on the back of the dots and put them all over your walls. If you notice that your dots aren't laying flat, before sticking the rolls of tape on, try putting them in between heavy books or in heavy books to flatten them out so they look nicer on your wall.

  1. The dots are so cute on the wall!
I can probably do that, since it takes too much work to repaint my room, and the apartment I live in doesn't belong to my family anyway (we rent it). I think I'll change some of the polka dots into stars when I do it, though :).
By the way, that picture above your door is so lovely!
