How to: Be Less of a (Crazy) Perfectionist

Hi there! I've called myself a perfectionist for the longest time and if asked, I'll still call myself one. Whenever I do something, I like it to be perfect and to showcase the best of my abilities, but that desire often came with a mountain of stress and a byotchy attitude that just isn't good for anyone.

In the past year, I've told myself something and did others that helped relieve that stress and all in all simply become less of a perfectionist. But don't confuse being less of a perfectionist with slacking off and being lazy - they aren't the same thing. You can (or at least I believe you still can) strive to do you best while being a bit less hardcore and perfectionistic about it, and I'm about to share with you how.

1. Think rationally

Look at the big picture. You might think that you need to get every single detail perfect for a certain project you're doing, but do those details that you're slaving over really matter? Of course, if it's a big school project or if you're preparing a portfolio for something important, slave away, but if it's the small things, look at it from a distance. Will this matter tomorrow? In a week from now? Then, with your rational thinking skills, make a decision on how to approach the task.

2. Prioritise and stay organised

This might seem like a perfectionist's actions, but if you write down what you have to do and prioritise your tasks, you'll spend more time on the things that are more important. If you can see which tasks are more important, you'll allocate your time accordingly to put more effort into the right tasks instead of trying to go full out on everything.

3. Accept that you're only human

You can't do everything and have everything the way you want. You just have to accept that you can't push yourself to extremes to achieve the ultimate unattainable dream of perfection and just go with the flow sometimes. It's also really important to take care of yourself and to get adequate amounts of sleep, keep a healthy and balanced diet as well as exercising regularly to keep your body and mind in good shape to perform well.

4. Meditate

I would recommend doing yoga, but whenever you're doing yoga or pilates, there's also that chance that you'll look at yourself in the mirror and want to do the pose just right. Relaxing and de-stressing is so important to make yourself go a bit less crazy trying to accomplish everything. Take some time everyday to meditate or do whatever it is that helps you unwind to basically keep yourself sane.

Overall, I wouldn't say that being a perfectionist is that bad of a thing, but if you're kicking yourself and working yourself too hard to get a perfect result, whether that be for a school assignment, a personal project or whatever it may be - just remember those four things. If it's really, really important, by all means go all out, but if it isn't - try to chill out a bit and save your energy for the really, really important things. You'll just burn out and it's not worth it.
